Why I made this
My 12-year-old stopped eating almost everything except steak and rice. Generic picky eater recipe lists didn't help, because none of them started from what my kid would and wouldn't eat. So I built a cookbook that does.

How to Use This App
👧 1. Add a Kid Profile
Go to My Kids and click + Add a Kid. Enter their name and age, and pick an avatar (an emoji, or upload a photo that gets cropped to a circle automatically). Then fill in:
- Allergies to exclude: a hard rule. Any recipe containing one of these never shows up.
- What tends to turn them off: a soft preference, like visible veggies or spicy flavors. These recipes get deprioritized, not removed entirely.
- Specific foods to leave out: write in exact ingredients not covered above, like mushrooms or cilantro. Recipes with these are left out completely, unless you turn on "keep recipes and suggest a substitution instead" and the recipe already has a known swap for that ingredient.
- Flavors they love and dietary preferences: used to find the best matches, not exclude anything.
- Hidden veggies: turn this on to prioritize recipes that sneak fruits or veggies into kid-favorite dishes.
Save the profile, then click View Cookbook on their card to generate a personalized set of recipes.
📖 2. Your Cookbook
Recipes are grouped by breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack, and dessert, matched to that kid's profile. At the top of the cookbook screen:
- 🛒 Add All to Shopping List: adds every ingredient from every recipe in this cookbook to your shopping list.
- 📖 Download eBook (.epub): saves the whole cookbook as a real eBook file you can read in Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo, or any other eBook reader. On a phone, the download itself just saves the file, so after it downloads, open it with (or share it to) your eBook app of choice, like Apple Books on iPhone or Google Play Books on Android, to actually read it.
- 🖨️ Print / Save as PDF: opens your browser's print dialog, formatted to look like a printed cookbook. Choose "Save as PDF" there if you want a PDF instead of a paper copy. On iPhone or iPad, it makes a PDF of the cookbook and opens your share sheet, where you can tap Print, Save to Files, or open it in Books.
- Show: switch between all recipes, only recipes with air fryer options, or only recipes with Instant Pot options. See section 3 below.
Tap the heart on any recipe card to save it as a favorite.
🍳 3. Air Fryer & Instant Pot Options
More than 100 recipes include air fryer directions, and 30 include Instant Pot directions, so you can cook with the appliance you already use.
- Finding them: look for the 🌀 Air fryer or ♨️ Instant Pot badge next to the prep time on a recipe card. To see only those recipes, use the Show buttons above your cookbook: Air fryer options or Instant Pot options. Tap All recipes to see everything again.
- Seeing the directions: tap 🍳 Cook it another way on the card. You'll see the setting first (like "400°F, 8 to 10 min" or "High pressure, 4 min, then quick release"), then the steps.
- How the steps work: they replace just the cooking part of the recipe. When a step says something like "Mix the batter as in steps 1 and 2," follow those steps from the regular recipe, then switch to the appliance steps. Anything extra you'll need, like cooking spray, silicone muffin cups, or 1 cup of water for the Instant Pot, is named in the steps.
- Printing just one kind: choose Air fryer options or Instant Pot options, then tap 🖨️ Print / Save as PDF to print only those recipes. The printed cookbook and the eBook both include the appliance directions for every recipe that has them.
Air fryer tips: cook in a single layer and work in batches so food crisps instead of steaming. Air fryers vary by brand and size, so check at the low end of the time range.
Instant Pot tips: the pot takes about 10 minutes to come to pressure before the cook time starts, so plan for that. A natural release means letting the pressure drop on its own, and a quick release means turning the valve to vent it right away. Milk and cheese get stirred in after pressure cooking so they don't scorch.
For meat, chicken, and fish, the steps list a safe internal temperature. A quick check with a kitchen thermometer is the easiest way to know it's done.
❤️ 4. Favorites
Every recipe you've hearted lands here, across all your kids, so you don't have to go hunting through each cookbook to find one you liked.
🗓️ 5. Meal Planner
Plan a week at a time using the tabs at the top: Household shows recipes safe for every kid's allergies and preferences at once, or pick one kid to see just their own matches.
- Click + Add on any meal slot to search and pick a recipe, or use ✨ Auto-fill Week to fill every empty slot at once.
- 🛒 Add Week to Shopping List sends every ingredient from that week's plan to your shopping list.
- 📅 Add to Calendar downloads a standard .ics file for that week, which you can import into Google Calendar, Apple Calendar, or Outlook.
- 🖨️ Print Week prints just that week's plan. Clear Week empties every slot for that week so you can start over.
Different weeks are saved separately, so planning next week never overwrites this week.
🛒 6. Shopping List
This builds automatically from anything you've added via a cookbook or the meal planner. You can also search for a specific recipe at the bottom of this screen and add just its ingredients.
- 📋 Copy to Clipboard: copies the whole list as text, ready to paste anywhere.
- ⬇️ Download as .txt: saves the list as a plain text file.
- 🗑️ Clear List: at the top of the list, empties the whole shopping list in one tap so you can start fresh.
🔄 7. Substitution Guide
Search any ingredient, like "egg" or "milk," to see swap suggestions across every recipe in the app, without needing to open each recipe card one at a time.
🌱 8. Introducing New Foods
General tips for getting a picky eater to try something new, separate from any one kid's profile.
📲 9. Add It to Your Phone
Put the cookbook on your home screen so it opens like an app, full screen, with recipes you've already opened available even without signal.
- iPhone or iPad: open eatthisnotchaos.com in Safari, tap the Share button (the square with an arrow), then Add to Home Screen.
- Android: tap 📲 Add to Home Screen on the My Kids screen, or open Chrome's menu (⋮) and choose Add to Home screen or Install app.
- Signing in on the app: enter your email as usual, then type the 6-digit code from the email instead of clicking the link. On iPhone the app keeps its own sign-in separate from Safari, so you'll sign in once inside the app.
- Your kids and meal plans are saved to your account, so they're the same on the app, the website, and any other device.
- Saving files in the app on iPhone: the eBook, calendar, and shopping list buttons open your share sheet, where you can pick Books, Calendar, or Save to Files.
