New Year's Eve Ideas for Kids: Party Snacks and a Countdown Plan

New Year's Eve with kids works best with an early countdown, a few easy party snacks and something for them to make. These 14 recipes cover all of it: confetti popcorn, starry fruit wands, an alcohol-free sparkle punch, countdown clock bagel pizzas and meatball bites with hidden carrot.

Below the recipes is a simple plan for a kids' countdown party, including how to ring in the new year at 7 p.m. Four of the recipes are dairy-free and egg-free. Every recipe has a kid job, its main allergens and an easy swap.

A Kids' New Year's Eve Countdown Plan

  1. Pick an early midnight. Ring in the new year at 7 p.m. Eastern, when it is midnight in London, or play a countdown video at bedtime.
  2. Make the snacks together in the afternoon. Popcorn, fruit wands and cereal treats are easy for kids to help with and can sit out during the party.
  3. Do an hourly surprise. Wrap a few small things, like stickers, glow sticks or a new card game, and open one each hour until the countdown.
  4. Start a time capsule. Have everyone write or draw a favorite memory from the year and a wish for the next one, then seal it until next New Year's Eve.
  5. Count down and celebrate. Noisemakers, a balloon drop from a sheet taped to the ceiling and sparkle punch in fancy cups make it feel like midnight.
