Thanksgiving Treats for Kids: 16 Easy Recipes to Make Together

Thanksgiving is a lot of food your picky eater may not touch. These 16 Thanksgiving treats for kids give them something to look forward to and something to do: a turkey made of fruit, pretzel turkeys with candy feathers, pumpkin pie dip and apple pie roll-ups.

There are also four table foods a picky eater is likely to eat, like mac and cheese muffin cups with hidden cauliflower and crispy sweet potato tots, plus a pumpkin pie smoothie for the morning and waffles made from leftover mashed potatoes. Four more are dairy-free and egg-free. Every recipe has a kid job, its main allergens and an easy swap.

Gobble Gobble Fruit Turkey Platter Allergy-friendly

15 min · Serves 6 · sweet, fruity, crunchy

Kid job: Kids can arrange the fruit feathers in rows and place the blueberry eyes, beak and wattle.

Tip: Grapes cut in half lengthwise are easier for little ones to eat safely. Small kids can eat the feathers first and save the turkey for last.

Contains: none of the top 9 allergens in the base recipe (check labels on packaged ingredients) · Easy swap: Pear → Half a small cantaloupe, rind removed, set cut side down

The full recipe, straight from the cookbook

Ingredients

  • 1 Pear
  • 2 Apples
  • 2 Clementines, peeled and separated into segments
  • 1 cup Seedless red grapes, cut in half lengthwise
  • 2 Blueberries
  • 1 Strawberry
  • 1 tsp Lemon juice, optional

Steps

  1. An adult cuts the pear in half from top to bottom, removes the core, and sets one half cut side down near the bottom of a large plate as the turkey body.
  2. An adult cores the apples and cuts them into thin slices. Toss the slices with the lemon juice if you want them to stay bright.
  3. Fan the apple slices in a half circle above the pear to make the first row of feathers.
  4. Add a second row of clementine segments inside the apple row, then a third row of grape halves.
  5. Set the two blueberries on the narrow top of the pear as eyes.
  6. Cut a small triangle from one clementine segment for the beak and a thin sliver of strawberry for the wattle, and place them under the eyes.
  7. Serve right away, or cover and chill for up to 2 hours.

Missing an ingredient? Pear: Half a small cantaloupe, rind removed, set cut side down; Seedless red grapes, cut in half lengthwise: Blackberries or Banana coins; Clementines, peeled and separated into segments: Canned mandarin oranges, drained.

Thanksgiving Questions for Parents

What are easy Thanksgiving treats for kids to make?

A fruit turkey platter, pretzel turkeys with candy feathers, pumpkin pie dip with apple slices, chocolate acorn cookie bites and apple pie crescent roll-ups are all simple enough for kids to help with. Most take 25 minutes or less.

What can a picky eater eat at Thanksgiving?

Rolls, plain turkey, mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, cornbread and fruit are common safe choices. Bringing one dish you know your kid eats, like mac and cheese muffin cups or sweet potato tots, takes the pressure off the rest of the meal.

How can kids help cook Thanksgiving dinner?

Toddlers can wash fruit and arrange it on a platter. Preschoolers can stir, pour and press toppings onto treats. Older kids can measure, mix batters and roll crescent dough. Keep knives, the stove and the oven with an adult.

What are dairy-free, egg-free Thanksgiving treats for kids?

No-bake pumpkin sunbutter bites, turkey rice cakes with fruit feathers, pumpkin maple muffins made with a flax egg and maple cinnamon sweet potato coins contain no milk or egg in the base recipe. Check labels on packaged ingredients like chocolate chips and rice cakes.

What should I do if my picky eater won't eat Thanksgiving dinner?

Offer a snack beforehand, put at least one familiar food on their plate and skip the pressure to try everything. One holiday meal does not make or break their nutrition, and a calm table makes the next new food easier.
